Description
The large inn in the town of Bree, kept by the Butterbur Family for generations. It stood just where the Great East Road bent round the foot of Bree-hill.
On 29 September T.A. 3018, Frodo, Samwise Gamgee, Peregrin Took, and Meriadoc Brandybuck arrived at Bree and came to the Prancing Pony, where Barliman Butterbur was the innkeeper at that time. The hobbits had followed Gandalf's instructions and expected to meet him there, but the Wizard was nowhere to be found. It was here that Frodo first met Aragorn and where the One Ring got onto his finger when he fell off of a table. That nigh the inn was attacked and the next morning the Hobbits with Aragorn set off on their journey to Rivendell. More than a year later, the hobbits with Gandalf stayed in the inn again on their return journey to the Shire.
