Brothers - Fire and Ice

Noldor, the High Elves, fled from Valinor in pursuit of the Dark Lord Melkor and the Silmarils he had stolen. Two brothers, Fëanor and Fingolfin, sons of Finwë, led the host of the Noldor. There were not enough ships to carry all of the Noldor across the sea to Middle-earth, so Fëanor led the first group. Upon arriving at Losgar, Fëanor decided to burn the ships and leave the followers of Fingolfin behind. Fingolfin and his people saw the smoke of the ships from afar, and chose to travel through the ice desert, for they were ashamed to go back to Valinor, and were angry at Fëanor. Fingolfin took them across the ice of the Helcaraxë, the journey was hard and many died, yet most of them endured and they came to Middle-earth with the first rising of the Moon.

Just like my earlier pictures Uninvited Guest and Durin's Stone, I made it for a Czech illustrators' website Projekt ilustrace, for January monthly contest "Fire and Ice". Surprisingly, noone chose an illustration from ASoIaF (which would suggest itself) - I was thinking about it, but was not sure what exactly to draw. And then I got this idea and found it really interesting, so I remained faithful to Tolkien. You can look at my picture in the contest here and if you like it, it is possible to vote for it after registration (or for another one, if you like it better ). Alas, the website is only in Czech.
As I've written in an earlier journal, this is the first part of a one-year challenge to take part in each one of the 12 monthly contests. So I'd better start working on the picture for February (topic: "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde").

EDIT: This picture was voted the best one of the January monthly contest.
