Description

Atanatar II – Enenquea Aran Ondonóreo – ar Tárirya (Atanatar II – the sixteenth king of Gondor – and his queen)

Atanatar II was the sixteenth king of Gondor. His father Hyarmendacil I had been one of Gondor's greatest Kings, so Atanatar II inherited a powerful empire stretching from the Greyflood to the Sea of Rhûn, and to which even the Men of Umbar and Harad paid homage. The King loved luxury and it was during his reign that the original Crown of Gondor was replaced by a jeweled helm. "Men said precious stones were pebbles in Gondor for children to play with." The wealth and splendour of Atanatar's realm earned him the title Alcarin ('Glorious') but he did little to maintain its strength, and nothing to expand its influence. Thus already during Atanatar's reign, Gondor began to stagnate. Atanatar II ruled Gondor for seventy-seven years, during which the wealth and power created by his father slowly began to wane. He was succeeded by his equally lazy and indolent eldest son Narmacil I.

It's been a long time since my previous entry in the kings of Gondor series, but I've always wanted to continue, so at last here comes the most glorious of gondorian kings. For obvious reasons, I made the border extremely richly decorated, as compared to his predecessors (perhaps even deliberately over-decorated). The overall colouring and style is reminiscent of his namesake and ancestor Atanatar I and also inspired by gemstones and pearls, symbolizing Atanatar's wealth. As for the picture itself, I made Atanatar sitting comfortably on his throne (as the first king in this series, others so far were standing) – to show his indolence. Also mark the new crown of Gondor.

Aside from being part of that series, I also submitted this picture for the NEVER SEEN BEFORE contest. There has apparently been no original picture of this very interesting (though not admirable) gondorian king anywhere online.

If you like my Tolkien-related art, look at my related journal or gallery folder.
But you can find even more of my pictures on my website Angrenost.cz. It's in Czech, but you can still look at the gallery of illustrations. Enjoy! :-)
